Broccoli is a vegetable that many farmers market shoppers ask for. Our season can be very short for broccoli production which limits the profitability of it as a crop for direct marketers.
Area Extension Agents are cooperating with the Piedmont Research Station in Salisbury to grow six varieties of broccoli. Data will be collected about various factors affecting desirability as a fresh market crop for area growers. Factors used in choosing the best variety include: flavor, yield, size, insect & disease resistant, etc. Varieties being evaluated include: Green Magic, Asteroid, Packman, Luna, Imperial, Gypsy.
