The National 4-H Livestock Skillathon competition was held in Louisville, Kentucky on Monday, November 17th at the North American International Livestock Exposition. The team members included Brandon Hartman of Walnut Cove, Kinsey Everhart, Brooklynn Murray and Emmett LaHay. The team was coached by Andy Burlingham, Livestock Extension Agent with the Pitt County Cooperative Extension Center. Brandon is the son of Keith and Sharon Hartman and is a member of the Forsyth/Stokes 4-H Livestock team that is coached by April Bowman, 4-H Extension Agent for Forsyth County. The team placed 5th in the nation overall and was 4th in identification. For the identification part of the contest, youth must identify twenty cuts of meat, twenty breeds of livestock and twenty pieces of equipment. Brandon was 7th in identification. The evaluation portion of the contest included judging a class of hay and a class of wool. Brandon placed 9th and the team was 3rd. The team also placed 10th in a Quality Assurance activity where they had to demonstrate how to properly work a live sheep.
Brandon said that he enjoyed the experience, learned a lot and made memories that he will never forget.
