Detention Staff Member of the Year

In July 2013, Corporal Angela Alston-Boyd was assigned as the Classification Case Manager for 8 South at the Law Enforcement Detention Center (LEDC). This area houses Disciplinary, Protective Custody, and Special Management Inmates. While conducting her duties, Corporal Alston-Boyd reviewed correspondence between an inmate and his brothers, who were also incarcerated.

All three inmates were currently in our custody for crimes that included 1st Degree Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury and Resisting Arrest. Two of the three inmates were members of a nationally recognized hate group or gang.

In reviewing the correspondence, Corporal Alston-Boyd discovered that one of the brothers was instructing his siblings to “go to war” with officers and contract medical staff in the facility. He continued to tell them to do so to the point of inciting a riot. This inmate had a history of verbally aggressive and threatening interchanges with medical staff. He also had to be restrained by LEDC during the altercation.

The inmate admitted in the correspondence of getting into altercations with other inmates in the facility. He stated that he was a king and meant to die in battle: “Let’s rise up and take over the whole floor and show them who the (family name) are.”

Corporal Alston-Boyd’s discovery diffused a possible riot and prevented injury to LEDC staff, medical staff and other inmates. Her work ethic and attention to detail are commended. Congratulations Corporal Alston-Boyd.
