The Toby Bost Urban Tree Endowment Fund
What? We have reached our endowment goal, thanks to the generosity of friends of Toby Bost and the Forsyth County Farm Bureau. The Urban Tree Endowment Fund at N.C. State University can now offer grants to individuals, groups, and organizations within the Piedmont Triad region. Two $150 grants will be awarded annually by the Fund committee to projects that involve planting a canopy tree on public or private property in Forsyth County and contiguous counties. Grant applications are due by March 1.
Why? Studies show that for every dollar spent on tree planting a community reaps six dollars in benefits. The very air we breathe is improved by the presence of trees. A large shade tree can absorb 10 pounds of harmful air pollutants, such as ozone; it removes 330 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through direct sequestration into its wood and provides oxygen for people. Trees reduce stormwater runoff and save 9% on a typical air conditioning bill in summer. Tree planting enhances our community and increases property values.
Who? Any individual, group or organization can apply for a tree planting grant if they live in one of the following counties: Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Stokes, or Yadkin.
When? The grants are due annually January - February (March 1 deadline).
Where? Grant applications are mailed to: Toby Bost Urban Tree Endowment, Forsyth County Cooperative Extension, 1450 Fairchild Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
